High street retailer Marks and Spencer has announced that Jan du Plessis will take over as Senior Independent Director from March 1st.

He will replace Sir David Michels, who it was previously announced will step down as Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director on February 29th, having served on the Board since 2006.

Robert Swannell, Marks & Spencer Chairman said: ‘I would like to thank David for his leadership of the Nomination and Governance Committee and his role in ensuring a smooth succession. We are delighted that Jan has agreed to succeed David as Senior Independent Director.’

The share price rose 1.16% to 357.50p by 13:23.
