US close: Stocks hit highest levels in three months
Posted on: 08 Aug 2012 by Polly York

US stocks roared to their highest levels in three months, driven higher by better-than-expected corporate earnings and a general decline in the level of concern over Europe’s financial situation.

However, it is worth noting that in the final hour of trading the gains lost some of their momentum, stepping back from the day’s highs.

Giving the stocks a leg-up were the comments made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her government backed the European Central Bank’s bond-puchasing programme.

COMPANIES

Knight Capital, the equities market maker which has fallen dramatically since a computer glitch caused hundreds of millions of dollars in losses fell a further 21.5% this morning, leaving the stock down 70% since last Tuesday. Many believe the firm will go bankrupt or be forced into an emergency sale.

Interpublic Group declined after another company published a statement saying it had not approached Interpublic with a merger proposition.

FreightCar America was also a significant faller after warning that ”coal demand remained under pressure from low natural-gas prices, high coal inventories and reduced industrial activity’.

Best Buy, the electronics retailer rose 10.9% after its founder Richard Schulze made an offer to take the company private.

Sunshine Heart was another strong riser after it received conditional approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its C-Pulse Driver deivce, which is designed to provide moderate to severe heart-failure patients with an improved quality of living.

First Solar Inc., an alternative-energy company, climbed on better than forecast quarterly earnings, which prompted the company to boost its full-year outlook.

OTHER MARKETS

10-year US treasuries fell by 1/32 dollars, with yields at 1.57%.

The September contract for Crude delivery closed up 0.9%, settling at $92.20 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, its highest level since July 19th.

Giving the stocks a leg-up were the comments made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her government backed the European Central Bank’s bond-puchasing programme.

FreightCar America was also a significant faller after warning that ”coal demand remained under pressure from low natural-gas prices, high coal inventories and reduced industrial activity’.

Best Buy, the electronics retailer rose 10.9% after its founder Richard Schulze made an offer to take the company private.

However, it is worth noting that in the final hour of trading the gains lost some of their momentum, stepping back from the day’s highs.

Giving the stocks a leg-up were the comments made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her government backed the European Central Bank’s bond-puchasing programme.

FreightCar America was also a significant faller after warning that ”coal demand remained under pressure from low natural-gas prices, high coal inventories and reduced industrial activity’.

Best Buy, the electronics retailer rose 10.9% after its founder Richard Schulze made an offer to take the company private.
