US close: Wall Street down despite strong house sales
Posted on: 25 Jun 2012 by Polly York

- Stocks down on euro fears
- New house sales better than expected

Dow Jones: -1.09%
S & P 500: -1.60%
NASDAQ: -1.95%

Wall Street started the week with losses, high volatility and a sell off across most sectors. Unsurprisingly, the European sovereign debt crisis continues to undermine investor sentiment with the nagging fear the crisis could seriously impair US economic growth.

ECONOMY

The main economic news was good on Monday: new home sales rose in May to 369,000, above the consensus forecast of 346,000.

COMPANIES

The FDA has requested additional information from Pfizer (-1%) and Bristol-Myers (-3%) on the new drug Eliquis aimed at preventing strokes.

Research In Motion (-7%) is considering splitting its business into two, according to The Sunday Times.

Constellation Brands (+12%) led the gains on the S&P 500, because brewing firm InBev is close to buying 50% of the Mexican company Grupo Modelo.

SECTORS

The biggest gains were in gold miners (+1.5%) and wine and spirits (+1.3%).

The largest losses were in shipping (-5%) and coal (-4%).
